Grace Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health, Dr. Erika Grace
Working with Marcia Ladd and Arlene Kaplan, Dr. Grace credits SCORE with being an impartial advisor she can trust to consistently provide good information in a timely fashion. She only wishes she had discovered SCORE sooner.
When Dr. Grace opened her practice she didn’t have any business background and relied heavily on the assistance of an integrated healthcare provider only to discover his advice was self-serving. She then hired a business coach to the tune of $1,200 a month who specialized in her practice area. But, when she discovered SCORE and realized it was of equal value with zero out-of-pocket cost, she was sold.
SCORE’s advice has been instrumental in helping to automate operations at Grace Physical Therapy and Pelvic Health plus helping Dr. Grace plan the launch of a second business. She appreciates Marcia and Arlene’s ability to anticipate problems, the resources and information they put at her fingertips in emails, and their moral support in challenging times. During the coronavirus epidemic for example, as she grappled with tough staffing decisions, they “were more helpful than ever,” she says.
“Being an entrepreneur can be lonely and isolating when you have to make big decisions,” according to Dr. Grace. “With SCORE you’re not alone.” While Marcia has a background in the healthcare industry, Arlene has a broad-based business background. However, “your mentor doesn’t need your industry background to be incredibly helpful.”
A hiring freeze at local hospitals at the time she graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine motivated Dr. Erika Grace to open her own practice in the unique niche of physical therapy and pelvic health. Dr. Grace was drawn to what was originally viewed as a women’s health specialty because she says “Women are socialized to expect dysfunction with their bodies, especially after having children and with aging; but, there is help for these issues and women don’t have to live with them.”
By providing a safe space to discuss and treat embarrassing urinary, bowel, and other pelvic issues, Dr. Grace’s team shows patients how to keep such dysfunctions from impacting the quality of their lives without resorting to pharmaceuticals or surgery.
